THE CORE FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE

  • To oversee, in consultation with the Senior Policy Adviser, the OMA’s local government engagement strategy – by actively monitoring relevant local government policies, drafting submissions, building relationships, and seeking opportunities to promote the OOH industry.
  • To help implement the broader Government Relations strategy – supporting the team by providing research, submissions and briefing papers.
  • To support the team to provide excellent membership services – by supporting the administration and policy functions of the team.

THE DETAIL OF THE ROLE

In consultation with the Senior Policy Adviser, oversee the OMA’s local government engagement strategy. Duties include:

  1. Monitor key local governments for policy changes that may impact the industry.
  2. Proactively engage with local councils to advance reasonable regulation of OOH signage.
  3. Advise OMA members of local government policies, and make submissions on behalf of the industry to local governments.
  4. Report on the outcomes of local government engagement – through ‘planning updates’ to the OMA Board, Committees and the OMA Newsletter.
  5. Maintain good stakeholder relationships with key local councils and local government bodies.
  6. Seek opportunities to promote the OOH industry and advocate for policies that will help strengthen its position.


Support the team to implement the broader Government Relations strategy. Duties include:

  1. Prepare submissions on state government planning matters and other relevant matters.
  2. Prepare briefing papers for the Senior Policy Adviser on government representatives or policy issues that may impact the OOH industry.
  3. To undertake general research that advances the interests of the industry


Provide excellent membership services. Duties may include:

  1. Arrange meetings and draft agendas for Regulatory Affairs Committee meetings and prepare minutes and action lists.
  2. Update OMA Policies on an as needed basis.
  3. Assist Senior Policy Adviser with OMA representation on committees and working groups, including OMA WHS Committee.
  4. Update and maintain Government Relations key contact list through Salesforce.

THE PERSON WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for a person who has a good understanding of local government, and the role would suit someone with town planning experience. We need someone with the organisation, patience and resolve to deliver results. We are seeking a hard-worker with good communication skills who will be energised by working in a small and busy team. We are big hearted and care about our members, the community, and the work we do. Our team is diverse and quirky, and our motto is “Spirited and Smart with Humour and Heart”.

You must have:

  • Understanding of local government processes, town planning and policy development.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement.
  • An ability to think strategically, and identify risks and opportunities.
  • Great communications skills, both spoken and written. A sense of humour is a plus.
  • Noticing the small things and attention to detail will win you friends.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and discretion in the management of information and execution of duties.
  • Ability and willingness to travel interstate for meetings when required.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, Powerpoint, Excel).


We would like it if you also had:

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications.
  • Experience working in, or in close association with, local government.
  • Knowledge of the OOH industry and workings of industry associations.
